We will spend the weekend considering inclusivity.
Yoga has the potential to become seen as something for the beautiful and young. But yoga’s greatest strength has always been it’s ability to work in and on every body and mind.
We will consider how we spread the message to wider audiences. Particularly young and old, the overweight, the poorly, those with learning difficulties, anxiety or depression.
As part of this weekend, we are really lucky to have special guest Nadia Gilani, author of the incredible Yoga Manifesto. Nadia will lead a class and talk about some of the topics in her book which have opened up discussion world wide on some of the really pressing issues in this subject.
Open to all yoga teachers and trainees.
About Nadia :
Nadia’s working background is in news journalism and communications, which she did for a decade before teaching yoga and meditation. She first discovered yoga as a teenager when her mum took her to a class in the 1990s. She wasn’t quite sure what she was getting into the time and yoga hasn't always been an easy ride, but it's a practise she's returned to during the twists and tumbles of her life.
Nadia has explored most styles of yoga since she first set foot on a yoga mat over 25 years ago. She found Ashtanga yoga in 2008 and it’s this integrated approach: synchronising breath and movement, interwoven with yoga philosophy, which most informs her teaching.
Nadia has extensive experience of working with people from all walks of life. From beginners to long-time students, people with injuries and disabilities, refugees and asylum seekers, to women who have experienced domestic violence, people living with mental illness and those in recovery from substance misuse.
Nadia is deeply committed to making yoga inclusive. Her teaching approach is contemporary and explorative, while maintaining a deep respect for the ancient practice it is. In her view, anyone can practice yoga if they want to - it’s down to their teacher to take a flexible, compassionate and intelligent approach to help students find what best suits them.
Nadia is a trustee of The OMPowerment Project and has recently started working with Urban Yogis.
Nadia is author of The Yoga Manifesto.
