About the class

The power of sound to create, and the human voice to communicate experience, are core features of yoga philosophy and practice. Vibration as sound is one of the 2 key means through which things come into being and their existence is known and shared. The experiences and wisdom attained in yoga practice are kept alive through these means of transmission. This is why we say that yoga is an oral tradition practice. Chanting is a way to learn, embody, and share knowledge, and it is the way yogis across the ages have kept teachings and the pathways to experience accessible. It is our turn to keep them alive by inviting them to live in us.

In preparation for Mothering Sunday, we will learn (or deepen our learning) and chant several mantras invoking the divine feminine energy as prana shakti: the Gayatri mantra from the Rig Veda, 11 names of the divine feminine from the Devi Mahatmyam each inviting a particular quality, and a mantra from the Devi Mahatmyam for mother earth and her rivers.

All are invited to join – whether you are new or experienced with these mantras and chanting. You are invited to listen or to add your voice. We will reflect on the meaning of these mantras and the purpose behind chanting them to gain comfort with the words and then we chant them to invite the experience of feeling them in ourselves.
