About the class

Chanting is for everyone.

Come and give it a try - good singers and terrible ones welcome. Bring friends and family, no need to be a yogi.

No prior experience of chanting is necessary to gain the many benefits it has to offer.

Through chanting, you meet the practice exactly where you need to. This might be finding a still point of relaxation after a hectic week at work, or the joy of singing in community, of opening our hearts or simply being present to the moment.

Wear warm layers and bring something comfortable to sit on if you'd like.

* What is Kirtan?

Kirtan is a form of devotional chanting whose roots go back many hundreds of years to India. It is a practice from Bhakti Yoga (yoga of devotion) and has the power to open the heart. The singing is accompanied by musical instruments, usually harmonium and tabla, and participants are encouraged to chant, clap and if the mood takes them, dance. Kirtan is incredibly simple and accessible, yet the results can be utterly transformative and profound. The practice is very joyful and a beautiful way to be and come together. Come and try it for yourself!

* About Tim :

Music has always been a part of my life but it wasn’t until my late twenties that I realised it was singing that gave me the greatest joy. After a spiritual awakening and some years experimenting with different kinds of voice work and sound healing I did my first workshop with Chloe Goodchild and The Naked Voice in 2005. This transformative experience set me on the path to becoming a devotional singer, which crystallised in 2006 with the release of my first CD Planting Peace and a life-changing trip to India. Since then I have worked extensively with Chloe and been witness to the incredible power of voice and chanting.

I began chanting publically in Bristol in 2006. I sing all over the UK upon invitation.

In June 2012, I released my first Kirtan CD, Devotional Heart, recorded with Tabla Tom, and released the follow-up, Give It All Away For Love, in April 2016.

This practice of chanting is a great source of joy and nourishment. I love the depth of silence that is achieved by chanting and this is an essential element of my sessions. I use meditative and ecstatic chants with Sanskrit mantras and English words, accompanied by simple melodies accessible to the Western ear. The repetition of these chants is a powerful and transformative practice, taking us deeply into our hearts. Chanting provides an opportunity to sing out without fear or judgement, dissolving feelings of separation and awakening compassion.
