About the class

A teachers' intensive with Anna Ashby.

Open to yoga teachers and teachers in training.

Stepping into the role of 'teacher' implies that there is something of importance to 'teach'. An effective yoga class not only offers a safe, methodical and accessible sequence, it conveys deeper meanings sourced from the tradition that render a sequence ‘purposeful'.

A sound and safe order of poses presents the surface of a purposeful sequence. To impart knowledge in a way that transmits the essence of the tradition through a sequence requires ongoing personal reflection, rigorous self-appraisal and direct engagement with scripture and other sources. This is known as swādhyāya.

A purposeful sequence resonates with this type of enquiry. It also allows for student enquiry through various modalities. And so the flip side of effective teaching calls for personal exploration, playful enquiry and learning.

This teachers' intensive provides:

– a brief review of sound sequencing;

– a reflective process for developing a 'purposeful' sequence which includes working with intention and exploring a yoga teaching and/or sūtra to inspire a sequence;

– time for developing a sequence around a scriptural teaching focus;

– a supportive space to come together in dialogue with other teachers.

The day includes āsana, group work in breakout rooms, journaling and dialogue.

Please make sure to have a notepad and pen.

About Anna Ashby

Anna has been studying and practicing yoga for over 25 years and has been teaching since 1999. An experienced teacher, she holds the highest level of certification by the Yoga Alliance Professionals - Senior Yoga Teacher (SYT) and Yoga Alliance (US) E-RYT-500. She also holds a B.A. (hons) in Modern Dance which she gained from Mills College in California in 1991.

Anna’s teaching style has evolved over the years from her study of dance, in-depth training with established, classical yoga systems that focus on alignment, and a dedicated meditation practice that developed while she lived for 12 years in a yoga ashram in upstate New York.

Her style reflects precise instruction that combines healthy alignment and intelligent sequencing with an appreciation for flowing artful movement. Her approach is methodical and accessible and incorporates the teachings of yoga in a way that is practical and makes sense in modern context. Classes and retreats are focused on learning and the environment open and friendly.

She also specialises in teaching restorative yoga, a style of yoga that is passive, introspective and breath oriented where the body is supported on bolsters and blankets and still for longer periods of time than in an active class. The purpose of this type of practice is shift the nervous system out of ‘fight or flight’ into a deeply felt relaxation response.

Anna teaches at triyoga in London and is one of London’s leading yoga teachers. She is a founder and senior faculty member of the triyoga™ teacher training programme, one of the most comprehensive and rigorous training programmes in Europe. Anna regularly leads retreats, workshops and trainings in the UK and Europe.

Anna is a registered SYT teacher with Yoga Alliance Professionals. This accreditation demonstrates excellent standards as set by Yoga Alliance Professionals.
